computing club notes 2-8-08 tips to pimp out your laptop -read dig.com (easier) or slashdot.org (more techie) to pick up other neat tricks like this -google-gmail, calendar, and reader --reader--like an rss feed-whenever a site is updated, it sends a snippet as sites are updated, good for stats journals too --notebook --gmail is nice to use for all of your mail--go to google help, outgoing mail --shortcuts/hotkeys-- hit question mark in gmail and the shortcuts come up -which school wireless network to use--jhsphsec or new year -webmail (i.e. jhsph email) is slow, instead use thunderbird, others -mozilla firefox- -search keywords--allows you to search sites without going to the site --to set up, go to site, right click on that search bar, select ``add a keyword'' -hit ctrl-L to get to the address bar -for macs user--quicksilver, or for windows use launchy -these are useful to open files, these will make your search quicker by showing which files match the what you type -google desktop ctrl-ctrl does something similar, but searches within files -you won't need your icons or start menu anymore -to get rid of or change start menu, right click on it and play with the options -to install linux in windows in a minimal way, use wubi-runs like an application in windows, you have to reboot your computer to get to linux once you have it installed -if you want to install it (not in just a minimal way), talk to matt -switching tasks on pc, use alt-tab--unsatisfactory without task switch xp -task switch xp will give you a mini screen shot of what each task is -virtual desktops -multiple desktops on macs (if you don't have leopard)--virtue desktop lets you switch to a different desktop--like having multiple computers to work on -windows equivalent--top desk -windows computers--autoruns, an executable, shows you all the programs that starts up when your computer starts up--uncheck everything that you don't want running at startup --proc exp--shows you what programs are running when windows is running --will google programs, show you what they do and if they're important -get a registry cleaner--called a c cleaner --keeps windows from trying to run programs that aren't there -how to turn off autorun from everything--google search it -for a particular device, plug it in, click properties and tell it not to autorun for that device -best kit to find rootkits-avg, lots of antivirus type stuff -bootcamp-lets you run windows vista on macs .bashrc .Rprof .emacs -check these out in profs enigma folders -these will contain aliases, i.e. using -e to open enigma -to get bash on windows, cygwin or services for unix -if you have a cellphone that you can get internet on, you can use it as a modem for your computer -easiest way to do this on a pc is dataconnect--you can get internet on your laptop anywhere through your cell phone -bugmenot website--right click where sites ask for username to log onto sites -go to bugmenot to get a username -for mozilla it's an add-on -use mailinator to get email without filling out long form -if you register somewhere, use your name+___@gmail.com and it will come to name@gmail.com, you can set up a filter to filter these out
