BIOSTATISTICS CENTER

MISSION:

To provide biostatistical and information science expertise in support of health research.

 

CLIENTS:

Health researchers at Johns Hopkins and other academic health centers, pharmaceutical companies, medical research organizations, managed care organizations, and government agencies (eg, FDA, state health departments).

 

SERVICES:

Consulting on biostatistical issues related to the effective collection and interpretation of health information:

  • Designing research studies

  • Designing data collection systems and instruments

  • Data entry and validation

  • Data management and quality assurance

  • Statistical analysis and data interpretation

  • Professional and scientific report-writing

The Biostatistics Center offers a free walk-in consulting clinic to all Johns Hopkins faculty and students conducting biomedical and public health research.

Clinic hours: Fridays, 10:30am - 12:00pm (sign-up begins at 10:15am)

ScM and PhD statisticians and computer scientists from the Johns Hopkins Department of Biostatistics and affiliated faculty from other quantitative departments.

HUMAN SUBJECTS RESEARCH AND IRB APPROVAL

Following the policy of the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, the Johns Hopkins Biostatistics Center is committed to protecting the rights and welfare of individuals participating as subjects in research. In order to efficiently and effectively assist you with your project, we require information regarding IRB approval or exemption from one of the University’s IRB committees (CHR, the JCCI, etc.). We are requesting IRB information on all research involving human subjects in which actual data sets are reviewed or analyzed. Requests from clients not affiliated with Hopkins will be reviewed by the Center Director on a case-by-case basis to determine research aspects and whether IRB approval is required. IRB information may be requested before the project can proceed to consultation. The information requested can consist of a copy of the official approval letter from the IRB committee, an email, fax, or departmental letter from the PI stating the approval date and committee name.
