STUDENT HANDBOOK PhD PROGRAM:
Policy on Student Support for Travel to Professional Meetings and Conferences The Department wants its PhD students and graduates to
be effective communicators of statistical and scientific research. Toward this
end, the Joseph Zeger Travel Reimbursement Fund has been established to provide partial support for PhD students to present papers or
posters at research meetings. The Fund recognizes Joseph Zeger, who believed all
individuals, and not just those of means, should have the opportunity to achieve
their full potential. Students must request permission from Dr. Daniel
Scharfstein, graduate program director, in
a brief letter, co-signed by the advisor, which indicates the meeting and the
paper title. Once students have obtained the necessary signatures, they should
bring the letter of request to Mary Joy Argo, Academic Administrator, in Room
E3523. Students will be reimbursed for up to a fixed amount that is set by
the administrator annually. (For 2007, the amount is $500.) Because funds are
limited, students may receive partial support for only one meeting per year. Funded
students are also expected to present their paper to the Department's students
and faculty in a formal or informal setting.
