How to install emacs on Microsoft Windows XP/NT

• Go to the GNU ftp site http://ftp.gnu.org/gnu/windows/emacs/
  1. Get emacs-21.3-fullbin-i386.tar.gz
• Get some utility for unpacking .tar.gz files
  1. Like Winzip
  2. Or, the R-tools from Duncan Murdoch's web page
• unpack the directory to wherever you want emacs, say c:/temp/
• This should create a directory emacs-21.3
• Double click on c:/temp/emacs-21.3/bin/runemacs
• emacs should now be running
• Right click on runemacs, create a shortcut and drag that shortcut to your desktop
